Keel bone fractures: a widespread and underaddressed issue

Laying hens
A widespread issue

Research suggests over half of UK laying hens have broken or deformed keel bones. This has significant welfare and productivity impacts for the UK egg industry.

Welfare and productivity impacts

Affected hens show reduced mobility, spend less time at feeders, and display elevated stress indicators. There is also emerging evidence of productivity effects, including reduced laying persistence.

A neglected problem

Despite its prevalence, the issue remains under-researched relative to other welfare issues, and is not yet addressed by most welfare standards in the industry.

Keel bone fractures (KBFs) are breaks and deformities of the sternum — the long bone running along a hen's chest — common in commercial laying flocks across all housing systems.

Research, collaboration, and advocacy

Stronger Flocks works with researchers, producers, and industry bodies to better understand keel bone fractures and support practical progress to reduce them.

We are an early-stage organisation. We are currently focused on establishing partnerships and developing our research agenda.

Research

We work with leading academic institutions to consolidate and extend the evidence on keel bone fracture prevalence, causes, and interventions.

Collaboration

We bring together researchers, producers, and industry bodies to connect the right people and translate findings into practical progress on farms.

Advocacy

We engage with the bodies that set standards for the egg industry, making the case for evidence-based welfare improvements and supporting the process of change.

Research and commentary

Explainer

What are keel bone fractures, and how big of a problem are they?

Keel bone fractures affect the majority of laying hens, yet remain little known outside specialist circles. We explain what they are, why they happen, and what they mean for productivity, welfare standards, and the egg industry.
